2018 was a year particularly favorable for Pinot Blanc. Springtime was rainy with cool temperatures, followed by hot dry weather at the very beginning of summer. Late summer brought frequent precipitation that mitigated the hot temperatures and allowed for optimal berry ripening, maintaining excellent freshness and intense aromas. Harvesting began according to schedule starting from the second week of September.
Immediately upon arrival in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed and lightly pressed. Each vineyard block was fermented separately to bring out its distinctive territorial characteristics. The wine was transferred into temperature controlled stainless steel vats where alcoholic fermentation took place at a temperature between 14-16 °C (57–61 °F). During the month of March 2018 the different lots were blended and bottled.
Scabrezza 2018 is straw yellow with greenish highlights. Delicate and elegant on the nose, it presents notes of green apple, banana and acacia blossoms with a hint of orange zest. The palate is remarkable for its excellent mineral structure sustained by pleasant freshness. The finish is soft and savory.
Scabrezza is made exclusively from Pinot Grigio grapes. A pleasant, tasty wine with delicate aromas. The label is a tribute to Dante with one of the verses he dedicated to Beatrice in the Divine Comedy. The name Scabrezza is a old term that was used to measure the flow of water in rivers and streams, such as water flow in ancient drainage channels, weirs and clapper bridges that still exist today on the property.

The Monteloro estate is located near Florence, just behind Fiesole on the foothills of the Apennine mountain range at an altitude of 500 meters (1640 feet) above sea level. The property extends over 600 hectares (1500 acres) with 94 planted hectares (232 acres). This is a unique area in Tuscany; an ideal terroir for producing white wines in particular Riesling and Pinot Bianco. The vineyards enjoy a year round cool climate on mineral rich soils. At one time, Monteloro was home to aristocratic Florentine families, such as Beatrice Portinari and Dante Alighieri, who spent summers in the countryside vacationing in their country manor homes. According to legend, this unique countryside of forests and narrow white country trails was the inspiration for Dante in his travels in the Divine Comedy. Fantastic mythological creatures possessing a triton’s body and dragon’s wings seem to pay their respects to the territory’s legacy and form the letter “M”, logo of the Monteloro estate.
